On Tuesday, August 30th, The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) announced the formation of a task force on educator sexual misconduct.
“The charge of this crucial task force will be to take a 360-degree view of educator sexual misconduct in private independent schools,” said Peter Upham, TABS executive director, “and to develop a set of recommendations — for schools and for school associations — to prevent sexual misconduct and to respond justly, compassionately, and effectively to reports of sexual misconduct.” “This task force is an expression of our shared commitment to eradicate educator sexual misconduct in independent schools and to contribute to broader national and international solutions,” said Donna Orem, president of NAIS. To maintain the clarity of its mandate, the task force will not focus on student misconduct. Nor will it serve as a forum for the adjudication of specific suits, cases, or claims against schools or educators. Instead, it will examine the latest research about sexual abuse prevention and response and offer information and guidelines for schools and associations of schools to help them improve. The group is composed of school leaders, survivors, investigators, as well as advocates and scholars whose work focuses on issues of sexual abuse prevention and mitigation. TABS and NAIS received scores of nominations, recommendations, and referrals from across the country. Task force members have deep expertise and wide-ranging experience.
