Summary: Scattergood students are co-creators of their learning outcomes. Here, education occurs within the relationship between student and teacher, and student and content. Connected by their goal to learn and work together, our students are motivated and compassionate.

They possess good communication, study and time management skills, and encourage their peers to succeed through advice and example. They recreate Scattergood’s culture each year, learning how to graph quadratic functions, conjugate imperfect verbs and provide support for an extended thesis, but also how to prioritize activities and backup data, to recognize when help is needed and how to ask for it.

Our staff members all “go the extra mile” to build caring, long-term relationships with our students, creating a vibrant learning community both in and out of our classrooms. They model academic curiosity, lifelong learning, and support individual student work.

Our learning community benefits from the unique resources of the Scattergood Organic Farm, pond, prairie, and our proximity to Iowa City. Through our regular classes and independent study program we provide experiential learning opportunities for the whole person.

Our Quaker values encourage our students to reflect on their knowledge, express themselves, engage in deep conversations, and to respect the lives of others. Students achieve levels of creative and critical thought that are more commonly found on college campuses than traditional high school settings. We offer a rigorous college preparatory curriculum culminating in studies of: trigonometry or calculus, government and global issues, Spanish 5, physics, and a challenging 20 page research paper that is defended to a panel of administrators.

Summary: Scattergood Friends School is a diverse, college preparatory educational community of motivated and open-minded learners, both students and staff, who value simplicity, integrity, equality, and non-violence.
At Scattergood, we bring forth the strengths of each individual through a rich and varied set of experiences which prepare students for higher education and life-long learning.
As a community, we appreciate the connectedness of our lives with the land, our inner selves, and each other. We work and learn on our organic farm, participate in a work crew program, and explore the appropriate use of technology as it furthers movement toward our community goal of sustainability. We believe that community is built through a process of living, working and playing together. Through the course of the year, there are a variety of community events which brings the entire community including students, staff and staff families together for fun and fellowship.
At Scattergood, everyone is responsible for the community and that belief is the foundation of the Crew System. Staff and students work together to cook the community’s food, clean its buildings and maintain its grounds, giving all a sense of common responsibility for running the school. Crews rotate every few weeks giving students an opportunity to build a base of practical knowledge in several areas. Crews range from collecting eggs and working on the farm, to meal prep or clean-up and facilities work. Through this communal work, students and staff alike share a sense of ownership and responsibility for their community, and giving all a sense of common responsibility for running the school. Each student and staff member take part in a work crew for about 50 minutes each weekday.
