George School is a Quaker, coeducational boarding and day school, grades nine through twelve, located in Newtown, PA. Founded in 1893, George School offers a broad curriculum including AP classes and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, a rigorous two-year course of study. Students come from diverse backgrounds, representing 13 US states and 42 foreign countries. 44% of US citizens are students of color. Quaker values such as tolerance, equality, and social justice create a diverse community where academics, sports, arts, and service learning share emphasis.

The George School Mission Statement: With Quaker tradition as its touchstone and academic excellence at its core, George School seeks to develop citizen scholars cheerfully committed to openness in the pursuit of truth, to service and peace, and to the faithful stewardship of the earth. We want our students to treasure learning for its own sake and to use it to benefit a diverse world. Above all, we want them to “let their lives speak.”

Summary: Yes, this is a place where you can grow without looking over your shoulder. It's a place where people (both classmates and teachers) care about you, challenge you, and nourish you.

Actually, you may be surprised about what feeds your needs around here. And we're not talking about the food. (Though even that has an interesting tale.) The George School campus is a place where it's quite normal to go to the Deans' office to nibble on Gummi Bears, admire a 150+ Pez dispenser collection, and talk philosophy. It's a place where dishing about pop icons is not half as interesting as debating human rights. And four square on Red Square is more fun than television.

Summary: Studying the performing arts or visual arts at George School will help you in many ways. Yes, you could learn how to handle a paint brush, a potter’s wheel, or your own voice. You'll also learn about dedication. You'll learn that struggling with something but loving it anyway is not an alien paradox.

Art also teaches us to look at the world through a different lens, in a different light, and from a different perspective. Art embraces understanding and empathy. In a Quaker school, we especially like that.

If you’re as passionate about sports as you are about learning, George School is the place to be. We offer teams in sixteen sports, and many of our students are multi-sport athletes. They are cheered on by the “Cougar Crazies” (sometimes complete with green and white face paint and drums).

Summary: The mission of George School's College Counseling Office is to help you find a college that is right for you. It's to help you "let your life speak." That's a Quaker phrase we like to use around here that, in practical terms, means you'll get lots of individual counselor attention and you'll look at lots of different colleges. It's not a cookie cutter approach. Yes, you might look at a college or two that's a household word but the real goal is to find that special place where you'll be happiest and most productive.

To do that, you have plenty of resources. There's the annual college fair and visits from over 200 college reps. You'll attend workshops and seminars on everything from financial aid to interviews to the college essay.

But far and away the best resource you have here are the counselors. You'll be matched with one your junior year who will work closely with you through the entire process. And our diverse student body with its multitude of interests means our counselors have worked with and looked at a very wide range of schools, including but by no means limited to the most selective. Our counselors attend conferences, visit college campuses, and network with other independent schools, so they're well trained at advocating for you, helping you, and, then, ultimately, helping you make the big step to college.

Department Director: Beth Ann Burkmar
