At Hyde, academics are only part of what we teach. Students get the tools they need to prosper and grow in this challenging world. That’s because our approach to education is entirely different. Our teachers focus on helping students reveal their character and develop the confidence they need to succeed in high school, college and beyond.
And the way we teach is different, too. We offer leadership opportunities to all students and help each student evaluate where they are on their own inner leadership journeys. And, unlike any other school, we involve parents and entire school community in the discovery process. As a result, HYDE students and families often realize their fullest potential and are uniquely prepared to navigate the tough choices they face in everyday life.
A whole person philosophy guides all our learning and teaching. Hyde was founded to strive to improve the current education system through an alternative approach that places value on an individual’s character and unique potential. Today we serve almost 2,000 students and families in private and public settings.
Located in the quaint and historic shipbuilding city of Bath, Maine, on the Kennebec River, the Hyde School campus was founded in 1966. Formerly the estate of shipbuilder John S. Hyde, the sprawling 145-acre New England estate includes the historic Hyde Mansion and carriage house, which houses classrooms and offices. Other prominent facilities nestled around the estate include the Wheeler Library & Academic Wing, an all-inclusive athletic center with field house, wrestling room, entertainment center, weight and cardio rooms overlooking the 1915 Sunken Garden, Health Center, bookstore, and café, the Student Cultural Center, the Spiritual Center, three playing fields, including a turf field, an all-weather track, indoor tennis and basketball courts, and several dormitories. Year-round, students and faculty enjoy miles of wooded running, bicycling, and cross-country skiing trails that extend beyond the campus.
The campus includes a 600-acre wilderness facility located in the remote and pristine Bigelow Mountains in Eustis, Maine, running, biking, and cross-country ski trails, state-of-the-art music recording studio and ropes course, climbing wall, and ice skating ponds.

Summary: At Hyde School, all students participate in the arts and three seasons of competitive athletics, and— in case we haven’t mentioned it—performing arts, community service, and campus jobs, as well. Only at Hyde will students say they never feel left out!Do you want to imagine what it’s like to be a student involved in the arts at Hyde? Some examples might be:- Students singing, acting, and dancing—at Hyde, there are two Performing Arts shows during Fall and Spring Family Weekends.- Students exploring their artistic potential by creating visual arts masterpieces in the Art Barn—an old, renovated barn with a soaring front window that allows natural light to bathe the studio, or digitally creating in the Digital Arts Labs.- Students recording original music in a fully-equipped professional recording studio. As for athletics, students who’ve never played a pick-up game of basketball can find themselves on championship teams. An athlete who plays soccer like she was born wearing cleats, may give up the perfect shot to allow a less experienced teammate have a chance at glory. Things to note about athletics at Hyde:- Hyde athletes are known throughout New England and beyond for their outstanding sportsmanship.- Referees have been known to vie for the opportunity to ref Hyde School competitions.- Janitors have been known to vie for clean-up of the Hyde fan section of the gym after competitions. (We really do leave it better than we found it!)

Summary: Hyde School has a history of helping students discover their unique potential. In order to become the best possible self, a person must develop- an understanding of themselves- the presence to speak, and- the grit and confidence to go the distance when the going gets tough. This is what Hyde School calls Inner Leadership. Students are asked to move past their comfort zones and contribute. Given the support of mentors, community leaders, and peers, they undergo transformative change within themselves.A student has developed their inner leadership when they have 1. Become self-aware2. Have the confidence to speak in public3. Are able to tackle challenges outside their comfort zone4. Are able to have meaningful relationships5. Understand their family’s strengths and challenges.A Hyde School education supports the growth in each of these areas. Along the way, students periodically come together and assess their progress on their leadership journeys. Students assess themselves, and faculty also assess each student. This feedback loop allows students to reflect upon where they believe they are as well as discover how they are perceived, giving them a good picture of what they are doing well and areas they could improve upon.Students who have achieved excellence status, which is defined as “the student-directed stage of learning where pride and confidence lead each of us to actively pursue our best and to help others in the learning process,” not only benefit from personal confidence, but also get to attend specific leadership opportunities, or “LOs.” For example, one such of these was a trip to New York City for the senior girls in the excellence phase. They met with women in leadership positions at Ralph Lauren and Ghurka, as well as visiting the Holocaust Museum and the MET.Through the learning and discovery and assessment processes, students gain the tools and the courage to step up and become leaders.
