Randolph-Macon Academy

Randolph-Macon Academy produces graduates who thrive in college and in life, through a program that emphasizes intellect, leadership, high character, self-discipline, and accountability.

R-MA offers a strong academic foundation with an emphasis on developing students’ leadership skills and character, while challenging students to rise above their self-perceived limitations. Students in grades 9-12 participate in Air Force Junior ROTC, which helps cultivate leadership skills while teaching students responsibility, integrity, accountability, and service before self.

R-MA's goal is to get each student into the college or university that is the best fit for him or her. Past acceptances have included Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, UVA, the Air Force Academy, and West Point--colleges recognized throughout the U.S. and the world--but we recognize that some students may be best served in different settings. Therefore, we work with each student to determine what it is they are looking for in their college experience, examine their talents and interests, and help them find colleges that match those criteria.

R-MA has both an Upper School and Middle School. The Middle School is located on its own campus, but students have the opportunity to take Upper School classes and participate on JV and some varsity sports. Personal attention and a nurturing yet challenging atmosphere are hallmarks of the middle school. A structured junior leadership program helps develop emerging leaders, while a new innovation lab engages young minds.

The Upper School focuses more on leadership and the level of academics is stepped up as students prepare for college, but there is still a focus on personal attention--getting to know each student as an individual, not just a student. Many courses are available as dual-enrollment classes, providing the potential for students to earn dozens of college credits before they graduate high school.

"My son came here in sixth grade because I was concerned the large classes at our public middle school would not suit him," said one parent. "He has stayed here because of the phenomenal teachers he in both the Middle School and the Upper School."

Summary: Randolph-Macon Academy alumni say it all the time: the teachers are the difference. Here, students find teachers who help them rise to their academic potential, help them overcome their personal struggles, and celebrate their triumphs. The Academy’s focus on developing knowledge, leadership, and character prepares students to meet challenges in college and in life.

Founded as a college-prep school, the R-MA embraces the success of that mission at graduation every year, as every senior earns at least one college acceptance, and graduating classes are annually offered more than six million dollars in college scholarships.

R-MA teachers and staff help develop the students’ curiosity, critical thinking, and analytical problem-solving by engaging them through interactive discussions, creative projects, and collaborative work. The Middle School Innovation Lab ties together creativity and technology, providing the venue cross-curricular projects and technology-based electives. In the fall of 2018, the Academy completed the transition to a one-to-one computer program, and opened the Hadeed Innovation Wing, which encompasses four simulation labs for robotics, flight, and studio art.

High achievers are challenged to soar further through honors, AP and college courses in the Upper School. Upon the satisfactory completion of college courses, credit is granted under the auspices of local universities. Advanced middle school students are also challenged, as they may enroll in select courses at the Upper School. There are ten honor societies to recognize students who excel in their coursework and character.

In addition to the courses required for a college prep diploma, R-MA offers a wide array of electives, including band, chorus, handbells, drama, art, yearbook, Utopia/Dystopia, 20th Century Warfare, Biotechnology, The Arts in Society (Honors class), and others. Students also take aerospace (Air Force JROTC classes) each year in the Upper School, which teaches leadership and citizenship. Students in grades 6-8 take double periods of English, ensuring that an R-MA graduate has the strongest possible writing and critical reading skills.

A signature program at R-MA is the optional flight program, which provides both ground school and flight lessons taught by school-employed flight instructors in school-owned aircraft. The program also includes Unmanned Flight Operations and, at the Middle School, a bi-weekly Flight Club.

A tutorial time is provided each day, during which students may seek extra assistance or make up assignments.

Summary: Decorating cookies in the dining hall, hanging out watching a movie or football, bumming snacks from your roommate, singing along to your favorite songs during a shoe shining party, doing homework during a mandatory study hall, engaging in avid discussions with college freshmen who have returned to campus, laughing with your friends--residential life at R-MA is an extension of both the home and the classroom.

All dorms have two students to a room—after all, one of the best parts of boarding school is rooming with your BFF! The Middle School dorm has four hallways—three halls for boys, one for girls. Like the Upper School boys’ dorm, the bathrooms are community-style. In the Upper School girls’ dorm, the set-up is suite-style; two rooms (four people total) share a bathroom and are responsible for cleaning it. There are room inspections to ensure that you are keeping a clean, healthy, neat living space, to help you develop good organizational skills.

Weekly residential hall meetings address a variety of topics. These may include cyber-bullying, career choices, or college life. These meetings may be run by the adult dorm supervisor, a guest speaker, or students, depending on the topic of the evening. This is a time to develop life skills that will help you in college and beyond.

Weekend trips include a variety of activities, such as attending professional sporting events in DC; visiting area museums; local air shows; paintball; movie trips; mall trips; and theater trips. There are also trips to Busch Gardens, HersheyPark, and Kings Dominion. Middle School students have the opportunity to go into town as a group under adult supervision to pick up necessities. Upper School cadets may walk into town with a buddy (of the same gender) or take the Front Royal trolley into the downtown area or to the stores just north of town.

Part of student life includes developing leadership skills and strong moral basis. To help students rise to become leaders of integrity, character and leadership lessons are taught through Air Force JROTC and in mentoring, and also through visiting guest speakers. In addition, R-MA has an honor code: “I shall not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.” This is strictly adhered to, holding each student to high standards, building a culture of integrity that is monitored by a student Honor Council.

Student Life

Summary: R-MA provides an emphasis on academics, leadership skills, cultivating a “service before self” mentality, and having fun! Sports, clubs, dorm life, and other programs meld together to promote friendly competition and teamwork in the spirit of growing personally and bettering the community overall. The concept of community service is so entrenched at R-MA that the student body serves thousands of hours each year, in spite of the fact that R-MA has no community service requirement for graduation!

Opportunities are everywhere. In addition to on-campus sporting events, dodgeball competitions and guest speakers, students have the opportunity to go on weekend trips such as paintball, amusement parks, shopping malls, and skiing. Students who live close enough to go home on weekends are allowed to do so every weekend except during pre-announced "closed weekends," such as Homecoming Weekend.

Summary: R-MA offers a variety of arts and athletic programs both within the academic day and as extracurricular activities. The wide berth of activities means students are encouraged to engage in multiple venues; at times you may find a volleyball player who has a key role in the fall play or a basketball player who also competes with the drill team. We believe that providing students with the opportunity to explore new areas and challenge themselves is how we can encourage them to rise above their perceived self-limitations.

Band, chorus, and handbells are academic classes that perform often during evenings and on weekends. Classes for beginning percussion and beginning brass and woodwinds are available at the middle school level. Art classes are also available for all grade levels.

Drama is offered as both a class and an intramural, with each production revealing a new rising star within the student body. Past productions have included Grease, Mulan, Once Upon This Island, and Godspell. Performances are so well-attended that the drama program had to move out of the "Little Theater" onto the stage housed in Melton Memorial Gymnasium in order to accommodate the crowds.

Because R-MA is a small school with a wide variety of sports, participation on a sports team is highly encouraged, and it is not unusual for an athlete who is new to the sport to at least make the team's "practice squad." R-MA Middle School competes in the Valley Middle School Conference, while most of the Upper School teams compete in the Delaney Athletic Conference.

Summary: R-MA’s college counseling office seeks to help each student find the “right fit” for him or her: a college where he or she will be successful yet challenged. The college application process is a team effort between the student, the college counseling office, the student’s mentor, and the student’s parents. The primary responsibility is on the student—for many of them, this is the first major life decision they are faced with, and it is important that they are immersed in the process, completing the work and making the hard decisions. At the same time, there is a safety net to ensure they make it through the college application season successfully; through Naviance Family Connection, students track colleges they are interested in, and also keep track of their application status for each college. The college counselor, mentor, and parents all have access to the system and can also view the student’s progress.

Students are encouraged to focus on the “right” college, rather than the one with the “best reputation.” It is easy to get caught up in the world of college rankings, but as a college admission officer at UNC Chapel Hill once said, “Those rankings are created to sell ads.” At R-MA, students are encouraged to consider what colleges offer the academic programs they desire, an environment where they feel comfortable, and opportunities that will allow them to experience new challenges and grow as individuals and team members. In short, they should seek a college that will help them continue to rise in Knowledge, Leadership, and Character.

The results of R-MA’s college prep program and college counseling efforts speak for themselves: graduating classes average about 70-80 students each year, and each class typically garners approximately 250 college acceptances to nearly 150 different colleges and universities, with over $6 million in college scholarship offers.

Summary: The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) at R-MA strongly upholds the core values of the Air Force: Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do. These core values encourage students to rise to their potential and even soar beyond it.

The JROTC program’s objective is to teach cadets about citizenship, responsibility, self-discipline, and character. Cadets are also instructed on the fundamentals of air and space in all their aerospace classes. The curriculum of the JROTC classes consists of the development of air power, human requirements of flight, the heritage of flight, and other aerospace teachings, as well as robotics. As a JROTC cadet, students will learn proper flag etiquette, basic drill and ceremonies, and military customs and courtesies. Students also effectively learn life skills such as time management, communication skills, human relations skills and management styles and skills.

R-MA's Air Force JROTC Unit has been recognized as a Distinguished Unit with Merit multiple times, and the Drill Team is the 2018 Virginia AFJROTC State Championship Team.

The "High Flight" program is for students who are particularly interested in becoming an officer in the U.S. military, either through attending a U.S. service academy or attending college an ROTC scholarship.
