St. Andrew’s School (DE)
Overview

Founded in 1929 with a historically unprecedented commitment to financial aid, St. Andrew's is an Episcopal, co-ed, 100% boarding high school situated on 2200 acres in Middletown, DE. The strength of our community is rooted in principles of trust, kindness, equity, and engagement. We believe in academic and human excellence—and that these two principles are not mutually exclusive. At St. Andrew's, you will do the authentic work of scholars in all of your academic disciplines. Your high school education will be centered on exploration and collaboration, on asking questions, on conducting research—and above all, on the joy and growth inherent to deep intellectual engagement. You will be an equal partner in your own learning and in building the culture of our classrooms and our community. You will experience a culture of kindness and a community of care at St. Andrew's. We are one of a handful of 100% boarding schools in the United States. Students and faculty not only learn but live together; at the end of the school day, you leave the classroom, but you don't leave the community. Our community values and fosters proximity, inclusivity, equity, and open dialogue in all our learning and living spaces. St. Andreans treat each member of our community fairly, respect and value other experiences, and support each other in every area of school life.
Academics
Summary: Our academic program reflects those qualities of mind we value most: thoughtfulness, inquisitiveness, creativity and a respect for rigorous scientific inquiry. These values find expression in a sequence of requirements in the core subject areas of English, history, science, mathematics, classical and modern languages, religious studies and the arts; a commitment, particularly in the early years, to the teaching of writing, critical reasoning and scientific investigation, and a deep belief in the world's religious, philosophical and artistic traditions as a lasting source of wisdom and hope. Of course, what will be missing from any description of our program—and what only a visit to St. Andrew's can provide—is the extraordinary vitality of our academic culture. Here you will see classrooms, laboratories and art studios that are lively, playful and intellectually serious; assessments that are creative and challenging and which have been tested against the best practices of colleges and universities; and students who are motivated, curious and deeply engaged in their work. Indeed, it is this high level of academic engagement—a quality most educational research suggests is a precondition for success in college and professional life—that most distinguishes our graduates. At St. Andrew's students don't just "study" art, science and history; they work, under the careful guidance of our faculty, as apprentice artists and scholars. As they do, they discover the joys and pleasure of authentic inquiry—an experience, we hope, that will sustain them throughout their lives.
