The Putney School
Overview
The Putney School is an independent day and boarding high school on a working dairy farm in Putney, Vt. It was founded in 1935 and for more than 85 years has been at the forefront of the progressive school movement, believing people learn best by doing. Through experiential and project-based learning, a unique work program, robust arts offerings and plentiful clubs, sports and extracurricular activities, students are encouraged to think for themselves, invent, design, experiment, compose, write, build and chase down new ideas. With a mission to create active, critical thinkers and members of a democratic society, Putney’s goal is not to merely convey information but to engage students in the learning process so they become makers of their own education.

Summer Programs
Summary: Putney Summer Arts offers unique summer workshops for teens and adults, welcoming a diverse community of students to live and create on our beautiful hillside campus in southern Vermont.
Department Director: Tom Howe
Summer Workshops for Teens
Description: 4 Weeks to Create and Connect Through Art At Putney, we stress the importance of practice and exploration in art making rather than focusing on portfolio building. We know that finding the joy in making art and discovering a personal voice will organically lead to a portfolio that is an authentic representation of the student’s passion and skill. At the end of each summer, students leave Putney with a diverse body of work that is representative of their growth and experiences. At Putney we grow as a community and as artists. Workshops are designed for students at all levels of experience and focus on each student’s individual trajectory. Students select two workshops as their main focus, and each workshop meets for three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon.
